What Is an Allergist?
As the name implies, an allergist is a physician who specializes in taking care of people with allergies. We define an allergy as an unusual sensitivity to a substance which most people tolerate and which is generally considered harmless. The substance causing the allergic reaction is called an ALLERGEN. Sometimes allergens come in contact our skin, such as plants or clothing. Insect stings expose us to venom, which can cause very severe allergic reactions in some people. Allergens in the air we breathe include pollens, dust, and molds. They can affect our eyes, nose, and lungs and can cause allergic reactions. Some common conditions caused by allergies are hay fever, asthma, and hives. You may also experience headaches, fatigue, irritability and other unpleasant symptoms.
Most allergies can be treated with up to date treatments delivered by an experienced allergist and staff. The symptoms can be controlled, allowing patients to lead healthy, productive lives.
