About Alternative Medicine
Alternative Medicine is becoming increasingly popular among patients,
especially here in California.

2001 for more indepth information on Alternative Medicine
The term Alternative Medicine refers to a large range
of therapies which lie outside the domain of traditional Western medicine.
At this point in time, the available scientific
evidence is not felt to show that Alternative Medication should play
a major role in the treatment of allergies and asthma. Most of the
studies in the literature have significant design flaws that weaken
the conclusion that their authors draw. Typical problems with these
studies include an insufficient number of patients, the lack of proper
control groups and inadequate blinding (either the patient or the
doctor knows what treatment they are getting, and thus there is bias
with regard to the results).
Further studies are needed to prove or disprove the efficacy of Alternative
Medicine. My own personal feeling is that with time, Alternative Medicine
will take on a greater role in the treatment of many medical conditions,
including the treatment of allergies and asthma. However, at this
point in time, we just do not have adequate proof that many of the
treatments which fall into the category of Alternative Medicine are
safe and effective. Furthermore, for the vast majority of patients
who suffer from asthma and allergy disorders, traditional medicine
offers excellent treatment options which have been proven to be safe
and effective. One of the biggest problems physicians have is that
their patients are nervous about telling them that they are seeking
alternative medical care. For those patients who receive allergy and
asthma care in my office, my staff and I wish to do everything we
can to keep the lines of communication open.
