Preventative Nose Sprays Vs Over the Counter Nose Sprays

Nasal Corticosteroids

Nasal corticosteroid sprays are available only by prescription. They are anti-inflammatory drugs that ease the symptoms of rhinitis – runny or itchy nose, sneezing, post nasal drip and nasal and sinus congestion. They sometimes help to relieve eye symptoms as well. These sprays do not offer immediate relief. They begin working after 3-4 days of daily use and peak in effectiveness after one or two weeks of daily use. For optimum benefit they should be used at least once daily.

While some are fearful since these nasal sprays do contain steroids, most of the medicine stays where it is sprayed (inside the nasal passages) and when taken as prescribed by a physician, nasal corticosteroids are a safe and effective treatment. Properly used under the direction of a physician, topical corticosteroids have a proven record of safety and are prescribed for children as young as age two. Keep in mind that the steroids used in these nasal sprays are not the same steroids some athletes use illegally.
